EU/Tunisia: new rules of origin for textile products in the coming months?
In the context of the development of the Euromed area, which is still under construction, the subject of the rules governing preferential origin of products is being developed with a view to simplifying the concept of transitional rules which will become official from 1 January 2025 (cf.Paneuromed area: official publication of modernised rules applicable in 2025).
In this context, three countries have not yet ratified the transitional rules. This is Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia, which is likely to put them in difficulty next year, vis-à-vis the other member countries of the zone which have already validated the new rules of origin for the last two years.
For this reason, the Tunisian Textile and Housing Federation (FTTH) has been negotiating with the European Commission for several months to implement transitional rules as soon as possible, with a limited derogation, on textile products. Discussions are still ongoing between the EU and Tunisia, but the target deadline for the introduction of these transitional rules would be 1st half of 2024.
The limited derogation for textile products could be managed in the form of:quantitative quotas.
