Textile CSR: a living wage, not a minimum, for fashion workers
A number of associations have come together to launch a European Citizens' Initiative on 19 July.Good Clothes, Fair Payclaimingvital wage (« living wage« ), and not only minimal, for textile workers. The final objective of this action? To achieve a European regulation which obliges clothing brands marketing their products within the European Union, the world's leading ready-to-wear importer, to guarantee avital wage for all persons employed along their production chain.
This « living wage » would simply allow workers to live decently by covering food, housing, health, education, social protection, transport, savings and leisure. Currently set by producer governments, legal minimum wages are often insufficient. And the situation has worsened since the pandemic. Workers in the textile industry, 80% of whom are women, receive a sum of two to five times less than that required to support themselves and their families. In Bangladesh, for example, the minimum wage is 85 euros per month, while the subsistence wage is expected to be between 250 and 300 euros.
The NGO consortium is giving itself a year to raise consumer awareness and public authorities, and collect the million signatures required to seize and legislate on the European Commission.
