CSR Pakistan: A new law to protect women at work
Pakistan's Parliament has passed a bill that should significantly strengthen theprotection of women from violence and harassment in the workplace. Drafted by the Ministry of Human Rights with the support of women's rights groups and lawyers, the text provides a more comprehensive definition of harassment as a « discrimination on the basis of sex, whether or not of a sexual nature ». It also opens up the concept of a workplace to include areas of formal and informal activity. This brings it closer to the terms of theInternational Labour Organization Convention, 2019(ILO) on violence and harassment (C190), not yet ratified by Pakistan.
This new legislation will make it possible to include domestic workers, often isolated and marginalized, who may be highly exposed to violence and harassment at work, as well as female students, a category previously excluded from the previous law. The complaint procedure should be facilitated and specific protections put in place to prevent reprisals.
