Suez Canal: Increase in transit fees on 1 January 2023

New rates to cross the Suez Canal are set forbeginning 2023 :

  • 10% increase for dry bulk cargoes and cruise ships,
  • Increase of 15% for all other types of boat.

As a reminder, tolls arecalculated on the basis of« Suez net gauge » vessels (degressive rate depending on the vessel's gauge slices, and depending on whether the vessel is loaded or ballasted). These rights arepayable in advance(before each transit) directly to the Canal Authorities. The tonnage or gauge is a duty paid by a commercial vessel assessed on its capacity.

According to a press release from the Suez Canal Authority (Suez Canal Authority, SCA) dated 17 September, this increase is justified in particular by the rise in energy prices and the increase in the volume of freight transported. It will address global inflation, which increases the operating costs of the canal.AuthorityIt also falls behind the fact that this maritime route remains the most efficient and the least expensive compared to the alternative routes available. This new rate comes after two successive increases in February and March of this year.

These adjustments are also explained by the projected revenue growth targets of the channel:

From USD 5.84 billion of royalties collected in 2020 to USD 6.3 billion in 2021, the Authority set itself atarget of USD 7 billion for 2022.
