BREXIT: Return of border controls in 2021!

In mid-June, the British Government announced the measures which will be applicable to border controls from January 2021.

In order to allow time for companies heavily impacted by the coronavirus crisis, these customs controls will be introduced in 3 stages :

Step 1 > 1 January 2021

Operators importing goods « Standard », ranging from clothing to electronics, will have to prepare for basic customs requirements:record keeping for imported goods andcustoms declarations Within 6 months.

NB : the payment of customs duties may be deferred until the customs declaration is drawn up.

Controls will be carried out on specific goods such as alcohol and tobacco, as well as live animals and plants at high risk.

Concerning the VAT import accountsThe instructions remain vague: « Companies will also have to think about how they account for VAT on imported goods« …

Step 2 > 1 April 2021

All products of animal origin (POAO:meat, pet food, honey, milk, etc., and all regulated plants and plant products will also have to be subject to a prior notification and be accompanied by Health documents appropriate.

Step 3 > 1 July 2021

All goods shall be subject to the declarations at import point and importers will have to pay the applicable customs duties.

The safety statements will be required, and controls of animals/plants and their products will take place at British border checkpoints.

To facilitate the processing of customs declarations, London has set aside £50 million to support the customs intermediary sector (recruitment, training, computer equipment, etc.).
