US/EU: extension of suspension of customs surcharges

On 19 December, the European Commission published Regulation 2023/2882 extending the suspension of trade policy measures for certain products originating in the United States introduced in 2018.

In November 2021, Brussels and Washington had managed to reach an agreement and suspended the EU safeguard measures introduced since 2018 for imports into the Community of many products of American origin in response to similar measures initiated by the United States against certain EU products imported on US soil (see:US/EU: end of customs surcharges for steel and aluminium?).

As a reminder, the list of products concerned is contained in an annex to the 2018 Regulation and includes, in particular, numerous articles of theChapters 72, 73 and 76(steel and aluminium) but alsoTextile articles(T-shirts and trousers) affecting many importers.

At a summit last October, the EU and the US welcomed the progress made on their trade and production dispute in the aluminium and steel markets. Washington informed Brussels of its intention to extend for an additional period the existing tariff quotas on imports into the USA of steel and aluminium products originating in the EU.

In response to this confirmation, the European Commission should suspend the application of the additional ad valorem duties for an additional period up to31 March 2025
