EU/Turkey: Is the Customs Union at Risk?
The subject of Turkey's perceived hostile actions will be discussed at the Thursday European Summit 10/12/2020, in particular on the gas exploration work carried out by Ankara in the eastern Mediterranean in maritime areas disputed with Greece and Cyprus: Brussels could tighten the tone towards Turkish people and companies involved in these hydrocarbon exploration activities.
In October 2020, the European Union had sent a proposal to open up Turkey, suggesting sanctions should no effort be made.
Since then, tensions with France have increased: the Turkish President has increased attacks against his French counterpart, in the face of deep disagreements between the two countries on many issues.
Mr Macron could propose to the European Council that revise the Customs Union implementation with Turkey...
However, several Member States, including Germany, are opposed to sanctions against Turkey, hoping to develop a more constructive relationship with this powerful country, geopolitical hinge between the West and the East.
