EU / China: points of friction in China-European relations

During the summit conducted by visio conference between the EU and China on Monday 22 June, taboo topics were discussed and the relationship became tense...

This 22nd Summit was approached on the European side in a more direct way, without a language of wood: human rights, the climate, the status of Hong Kong and the commercial relationship were put on the table.

Lagreement on investment protection, expected to be finalised in 2020, is no longer progressing.

EU side, the bilateral relationship lacks reciprocity and there is no desire to rush things any further:Today's mistrust has been accentuated by the lack of transparency on the Chinese side during the health crisis.

The attempt to regain sovereignty over Hong Kong is a matter of great concern to European leaders.

In the face of an aggressive China, the EU no longer wants to bend back and defend itself to preserve its interests and values.

For example, Brussels did not hesitate to impose anti-dumping rights to Chinese companies which had attempted to circumvent European tariff barriers through the entities based in Egypt.

Another victory,Beijing did not renew its WTO complaint endorsing the position of Europeans who still do not recognize China as a market economy (cf. Market Economy Status: Does China Prepare a Holding Up?).
