Road transport: Alsatian ecotax outstanding until 2025
On 11 March, the European Community of Alsace announced that it would wait 2025 to launch the R-Pass, ecotax for heavy goods vehicles circulating in its territory. The purpose of this delay? Take the time to exchange with the various economic sectors, particularly the transport sector, and then consult the population in 2023 to take a decision in 2024 for an implementation of the 1 January 2025.
Authorised by Parliament on 28 February (cf. Road transport: ecotax in Alsace in 2024), this tax is aimed at regulating heavy-duty traffic between Germany and Alsace. Currently, 2000 to 2500 trucks would cross the Rhine every day to avoid paying the Maut, a German truck tax in force since 2005. This measure sought to weigh only on large transit, but European law does not allow it. Local carriers will have to get their hands on the purse too! Compensation could be provided to ease their rating.
On the technical side, like the Viapass system in Belgium, trucks could be invoiced using a satellite tracking system and detected by checkpoints, knowing that there are already 5 porticos available in the region, new ones could be created.
