Maritime transport: strike movements in French ports
Strikes in French ports started in May and are likely to continue in June. Coupled with a Peak Season that appears to be in advance and approaching the Olympic Games, a wave of disruption is to be expected.
It's a rough spring for shipping. At the dawn of the Olympic Games in the French capital (cf.Logistics during the Paris 2024 Olympics: who will win the gold medal of patience?) and while it remains difficult to find space for goods on the Asia/Europe axis (cf.Asia/EU transport: space shortage in the sea and rising rates in the air), strike movements, started in May in French ports, are likely to continue throughout June.
Marseille Port should be closedon the following dates:7, 13, 21 and 25 June 2024.
In all French ports (including Le Havre, Rouen, Bordeaux and Nantes Saint-Nazaire), the unions called for14 days of strikeas follows:
- one day «dead port» onFriday, 7 Junewith 24-hour work stoppage and port blocking,
- three days of24-hour strikeon 13, 21 and 25 June,
- several days withstoppage of work for 4 hoursbetween 10am and 4pm depending on the ports, on the following dates: 4, 6, 10, 12, 14, 18, 20, 24, 26 and 28 June.
These strikes are carried out by dockers and port workers to protest the reform of pensions, in particular with a view to obtaining recognition of the tenability of their working conditions.
It remains to be seen whether this movement will roll over all the announced dates and whether it will be followed. The situation could indeed evolve in the light of the ongoing negotiations.
Yesterday, Wednesday, June 5,professional transport organisations have alerted the public authoritiesin order to reduce the problem, calling for rapid measures to restore the flow of goods as quickly as possible (mobilisation of equipment and personnel, lifting of traffic bans in the coming weekends, support for fragile companies, etc.) and to limit the additional costs for actors in the supply chain (detention fees and demurrage, parking charges, etc.).
