International transport: Spain-Morocco submarine tunnel project resurfaces

The ambitious project to build an underwater railway tunnel linking Spain and Morocco, envisaged in 1979, was relaunched following the improvement of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

Currently, passenger and freight transport between Spain and Morocco is carried out mainly by ferries. However, the underwater tunnel project, if implemented, should greatly facilitate such exchanges, thereby strengthening economic, social and cultural ties between the two nations. It is also planned that the tunnel will be operational before the 2030 World Cup, co-organized by Spain, Portugal and Morocco. The aim is to start work by 2030.

38,5 kilometres long, 28 kilometres under the sea,It would link Malabata, near Tangier, Morocco, Punta Paloma, Spain, with two railway tunnels and a service and rescue gallery. This project, whose technical feasibility has been confirmed, representsa strategic link between Africa and Europepromising a multi-level revolution in relations between the two continents. The Spanish government, with an initial budget of €750,000, commissioned a study to assess the viability of this titanium project.

The project is supported by several international actors, including the European Union, the United Kingdom, the United States, China, Japan, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia. In addition, international financial institutions such as the World Bank, the African Development Bank and the Islamic Development Bank have expressed their support.

In the long term, the Spanish-Moroccan submarine tunnel, in addition to reducing transport and logistics costs, would promote trade and human travel, thus consolidating relations between Europe and Africa. With an estimated transit capacity of over 13 million tonnes of goods and 12.8 million passengers annuallyThis project could mark a significant turning point for the economic development of the western Mediterranean region.
