Air transportation: to a cleaner plane?

Representative 2% of global CO2 emissions, the global aviation sector is expected to reduce its environmental impact.

Innovative solutions are emerging to adopt biofuels around the world.

Even in the United Arab Emirates, where oil is the king, researchers are trying to make biofuels from the country's dating cores!

In France, French roadmap for the deployment of sustainable aviation biofuels launched in January 2020, calls on air transport to replace fossil fuel with biofuels 2^e generation of 2% in 2025, 5% in 2030 and 50% in 2050.

On May 18th, an Airbus A350 Air France made the first long-haul Paris/Montreal flight with sustainable fuel produced from cooking oils! The aircraft tanks were filled with a mixture of kerosene and 16% of agrofuel, called « FAS » (Sustainable Aviation Fuel) produced in France from waste and used cooking oils.

A widely relayed feat, but not necessarily new. Indeed, this is not the first time a plane has been flying with biofuel.

The advantage of second generation biofuels is that they can be used for already existing aircraft,up to 50% of fuel,So there's no need to change the fleets.

However, the cost of these fuels remains 4 times more expensive than kerosene.

Another problem is that production capacity is relatively low in France and the European Union: more than half of the waste oils currently used come from other countries, such as China, the United States or Malaysia.

Other routes are envisaged as hydrogen use. But this solution requires creating new aircraft concepts...
