Textile sourcing: evaluation report on forced labour in supply chain

The supply chains for clothing and footwear, mainly located in South-East Asia and Turkey, are characterised by often abusive working conditions, driven by downward pressure on prices and last minute orders. Poverty, discrimination, the lack of protection of labour law and movement restrictions are all factors that favour the risks of forced labourincluding women, young workers, migrants, ethnic and religious minorities. The VOCID-19 pandemic has dramatically aggravated these factors.

The report evaluated the ESG communication (Environment, Social and Governance) from 37 large companies in the sector on 7 themes based on the «Guiding principles on business and human rights» to determine their policy and assess their actions to combat the worst forms of exploitation in their supply chains.

While significant progress appears on the theme Commitment & Governance, thanks to greater transparency on policies and processes, however, companies do not care enough about effectiveness and policy outcomes.

Most of the firms evaluated report on their risk analysis and their evaluation programmes (audits), but these remain mainly focused on top-tier 1 suppliers, while the main risks of forced labour are further upstream of the supply chain, from spinning to tanneries to farming and farming.

While companies have made progress on the issue of recruitment of migrants, substantial improvements are lacking in key areas such as migration and migration. responsible purchasing practices and remediation. For example, they failed to guarantee concrete solutions for the workers concerned.

In order to improve the situation of workers who are victims of forced labour, Know the Chain makes various recommendations to companies, investors and governments in particular with regard to due diligence.
