Sourcing Malaysia: Minimum wage increase on 01/02/20

The Government of Malaysia has applied a new minimum wage of 1200 Ringgits per month (259 €) an increase of RYM 100 (+9%) compared to 2019.

This increase entered into force on 1 February 2020, the 56 largest cities in the country.

It should make it possible to offsetting the rising cost of living in these regions.

The government also:

  • increased period of maternity leavethe 60- to 90-day pass,
  • pthe payment of overtime workers earning less than 4000 RYM (863€)

Yet the Malaysian economy being fragile, the employers' unions did not fail to stress that the increase in the minimum wage would reduce profit margins as much and could encourage dismissals...

Currently, Malaysia is one of the countries most affected by measures taken to contain the spread of Coronavirus.
