CSR: a map that reveals the most polluting sites in the world
The online tool developed by Climate Trace gathers tens of thousands of data on a single map, highlighting the sites and sectors that emit the most greenhouse gases in the world.
Presented on 9 November last at COP27 (United Nations Conference on Climate Change) in Egypt, an unpublished interactive map lists the most greenhouse gas emitting sites in the world. Developed by the Climate Trace coalition of research laboratories, companies and NGOs, this free and accessible online tool uses artificial intelligence processes to collect and analyze data measured by 300 satellites and 11,100 aerial, terrestrial and maritime sensors. This includes more than 72,000 sites worldwide in sectors such as energy production, heavy industry, agriculture, waste, mining and transportation, including moving cargo. It is thus discovered that a significant part of carbon pollution actually comes from a small number of installations,he 14 most polluting sites being all oil or gas fields, the permian shale oil basin in Texas, being the first in the world.
If the website and data are currently updated annually, the idea, eventually, is to obtain data in real time by gradually passing through information collected monthly and then weekly. This tool could prove useful to countries and businesses to make progress towards decarbonisation.
