CSR: « rubies of blood » finance Burmese junta
Burmese rubies, called pigeon blood rubies because of their frank red colour, are sold as symbols of human connection and affection, yet their supply chain is impregnated with corruption and dreadful violations of human rights.
The precious stones industry in Myanmar represents between $346 million and $415 million per year. Since the last licence expired in 2020, mining has been illegal in the country. Soldiers extort payments to informal miners and organize gem fairs for unscrupulous buyers. They smuggle rubies into Thailand where they are cut, polished and treated before being sold to jewelers around the world. By the time they arrived in Thailand, most dealers had no idea where the stones came from, and were not even familiar with it.
According to Global Witness, it is impossible to set up a traceability system on Burmese rubies, and therefore to supply them, without contributing to the financing of military groups and participating in human rights violations. In view of this situation, the NGO recommends that jewellers suspend purchases of Burmese precious stones.
Since the coup d'état, not only are companies boycotting the country, but the European Union, the United States and the United Kingdom have imposed economic sanctions. And the ACT (Association for Contract Textiles) brand coalition recently announced the suspension of its activities in the country, following the declaration by the international trade union IndustryAll that it is no longer able to operate freely in the country.
