CSR Bangladesh: Government ratifies ILO Minimum Age Convention

Bangladesh has just signed the International Labour Organization (ILO) Convention on Minimum Age below which it is not allowed to work. A new step forward for labour law in this country.

On 22 March 2022, Dhaka ratified the ILO Convention 138 on Minimum Age. The Government of Bangladesh has also revised the list of hazardous work by increasing the type of hazardous work prohibited to children from 38 to 43. It also continues its efforts to facilitate access to vocational training and education.

It thus reaffirms its commitment to the fight against against Child Labour and in their protection against work for which they are too young or which endanger their health, morals, psychological well-being and access to education.

This Convention requires States to set a minimum age below which it is not possible to be admitted to employment and to take measures to phase out child labour. Bangladesh‘minimum age at 14 years. This measure will enter into force one year after its signature on 22 March 2023.

Bangladesh has now ratified all 7 core ILO conventions. These various measures are part of the objectives of a National Action Plan to reform the labour market in the country by 2025 (see CSR Bangladesh: Towards an Improvement of Labour Law?).
