REACH: Towards safe and sustainable chemicals?
Nearly 20 years after the first approach to chemicals management in Europe, the chemicals sustainability strategy aims to significantly strengthen the protection of human health and the environment from harmful chemicals, with particular attention to the vulnerable groups.
Key Strategic Actions:
- Prohibition of the most harmful chemicals in consumer products: toys, childcare articles, cosmetics, detergents, materials in contact with foodstuffs and textiles;
- Phase-out Per- and polyfluoroalkylated substances (PFAS) in the EU, unless their use is essential;
- Taking into account « cocktail effect » * in the assessment of chemical risks;
- Stimulation of investment and innovation for the production and use of safe and sustainable chemicals from design to life cycle ;
- Guarantee ofaccess to informationon the chemical content of products for producers and consumers;
- Promoting resilience forsupply of essential chemicalsfor the European Union;
- Simplification of the procedure « a substance, an assessment » with regard to therisk and hazard assessment chemicals;
- Strengthening EU leadership at the global level, by promoting and promoting high standards and by not exporting banned chemicals.
