Pakistan: ratification of two ILO Conventions on Safety and Health at Work
Victims of devastating flooding this summer (cf.Pakistan: Floods affect textile industry), Pakistan, which has estimated its financial losses at $30 billion, is trying to recover but still bears the stigma of this climate change disaster. While work has not yet been able to resume normally in some heavily affected areas, the government is working on theratification of two fundamental conventionsInternational Labour Organization (ILO) on occupational safety and health, added last June at the 110th International Labour Conference. These are Conventions Nos 155 on the safety and health of workers and 187 on the promotion of safety and health at work.
At a national tripartite workshop co-hosted by the Ministry of Human Resources Development of Pakistan and ILO, held from 13 to 15 September in Islamabad, government representatives, workers' and employers' organizations reviewed provincial and national occupational safety and health policies and reviewed ILO conventions.
It was noted, for example, that the country's policy and legislative frameworks on the subject of OSH, inspection systems, systems for reporting accidents at work and occupational diseases, and OSH training systems for workers and employers should berevised and strengthened, in order to offerdecent working conditionssafe and healthy.
This workshop, which represents an important step forward for Pakistan on the subject of OSH, was welcomed by the promoters of the ILES (International Labour and Environmental Standards Application in Pakistan) project, financed by the European Union to the tune of €12 million, which aims to support Pakistan in complying with international labour and environmental standards, including the preferential access of the country to the EU market under GSP+.
