WTO: A woman soon to lead world trade!
Until now always led by men, the WTO will soon be run by a woman.
Following Roberto Azevedo's resignation last August (cf.WTO: Director General resigns... the coup de grace?)We will know on November 6, 2020 that Nigerian Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala or Korean Yoo Myung-hee will take the lead.
The two women, largely supported by the European Union, find themselves in « Final phase » After the last male candidates in the competition (Saudi Mohammed Al-Tuwaijri and British Liam Fox) were rejected.
Training economist, Ms. Okonjo-Iweala was the first woman in Nigeria to lead the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, before assuming the position of World Bank Operations Director and then to perform in WHO: known incorruptible in her country, she is often nicknamed « Okonjo Wahala », which means « Okonjo's a pain in the ass »...
His South Korean opponent, Ms. Yoo Myung-hee, was the first woman appointed to the head of the Ministry of Trade in her country: in particular in charge of relations with WTO, she managed the negotiations of several free trade agreements including the one between China and South Korea.
