New increase announced by shipping companies working on the trans-Pacific route

As from 1 September 2024, containers on the trans-Pacific route will be subject to a further general rate increase.

Freight transport by sea is regularly subject to tariff adjustments. The most common, easily identifiable on a transport rating, are the PSS – Peak Season Overloads*. Others are less known, like GRI – General Rate Increases. These famous GRIs are established by shipping companies, enabling them to cope with the evolution of their operational costs. They vary according to the commercial routes used, the type of service and container reserved.

As of 1 September, the Trans-Pacific route connecting Asia to North America and serving the ports of the U.S. and Canadian West Coast will be the subject of anew GRI.

Each shipping company controls and applies its own tariffs but, on average, the increase from that date will be as follows:

20 FT : 1 800 USD / container

40 FT: 2,000 USD / container

40 HQ : 2,250 USD / container

45 FT : 2,535 USD / container

It will be necessary to draw closer to its freight forwarder in order to know precisely the increase applicable to a proposed operation from September onwards.

*PSS – Peak Season Overload: Overload imposed during the high transport season, when demand exceeds supply.
