EU extends suspension of trade rebalancing measures with US
The European Commission formally suspended, from 7 February to 6 August 2026, the application of Articles 1, 2 and 3 of Implementing Regulation (EU) 2025/1564 which provided for rebalancing measures, such as additional customs duties on certain imports from the United States and restrictions on exports of certain Union products to the United States.
These measures were introduced in July 2025 in response to the US surcharges on steel, aluminum, certain vehicles and parts, and a wide range of agricultural and industrial products.
Following the political agreement of late July 2025, the European Union decided to temporarily suspend its rebalancing measures towards the United States. Implementing Regulation (EU) 2026/295, states that this suspension, concerning additional duties and certain restrictions, is extended until August 6, 2026. No new customs duty rate is fixed, it is only a framed break to allow time for the commitments made between the parties to implement.
This suspension shall remain temporary and may be reviewed at any time. In the event of unfavourable developments in trade relations, the additional duties provided for in Regulation 2025/1564 could be quickly restored, with an immediate impact on the flows concerned.
This dynamic is part of a broader context of active US commercial diplomacy. Washington recently announced a new framework trade agreement with Bangladesh, indicating a sustained bilateral strategy that could influence some international supply chains, particularly in textiles and manufacturing.
For European companies, therefore, strategic vigilance is still needed.
