After the Nutri-score of food products and the energy label of appliances, it is the turn of clothing and textile products to display a environmental label.
Programme anti-spousal law for a circular economy pat the JORF on 11 February 2020The aim of this measure is to inform the consumer of the Environmental and social impact of products and to direct his choice.
Regularly criticized for its social practices, the textile industry also remains one of the most polluting for our planet:
- emissions of 1.2 billion tonnes of greenhouse gases each year (more than international flights and combined maritime traffic);
- excessive water consumption;
- use of pesticides in crops and chemicals in dyes, etc.
What's more, today we buy 60% more clothes than 15 years ago, and we keep them half as long... it was time to act!
Some signs from the fashion sector had already rubbed in exercise in recent years, without generating a real movement of background...
Although the current project is still based on the voluntary brandingthe government would like to deploy this system on a large scale, and eventually becomes mandatory.
This should be the case if the European Union adopts a regulation on this subject: for the time being, work with the fashion industry has just been launched for the next 18 months.
Next labels should have a small blue planet and display a Note between A and E From A, for the least impacting products to E, for the least environmentally friendly products.
The calculation of this note will take into account
- of the the whole life cycle of the garment : from raw materials to end-of-life use or transport;
- of the environmental impacts such as CO2 emissions, resource depletion or air and water pollution;
- of thesocial criteria which remain to be defined.
By involving consumers in this way, the aim is to empower consumers and direct their choice towards products that are more environmentally friendly: efforts that should help to achieve the objectives of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
