Logistics during the Paris 2024 Olympics: who will win the gold medal of patience?

The Paris Olympic Games, organised to host this summer's athletes and spectators from all over the world, promise to be a true obstacle route for transport professionals. Patience and anticipation will be in order to circulate your goods.

Paris is preparing to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games, an event of international importance that will see thousands of visitors in the heart of the capital. If such an event promises beautiful moments of emotion, as much as saying that there should be many sporting challenges, and not only on the ground! Traffic restrictions, reserved routes, deliveries, cybersecurity... the daily life of Paris and francilian companies will be completely disrupted, and even more so for transport and logistics actors. If these professionals organize at best and adapt, even as the demand for freight transport is going to be upset over this period, so far there are still shadow zones on certain traffic arrangements and regulations.

The Olympic and Paralympic Games will take place from 26 July to 11 August 2024 and from 28 August to 8 September respectively, but one can expectdisturbances until the end of Septemberor October, until the dismantling of competition sites. For the time being, these sites are being installed and certain streets or areas of Paris already closed to traffic.

4 security perimeters around Olympic sites

For obvious safety reasons, during the Games, competition sites will be subjected totraffic prohibition and restriction perimeters :

  • grey perimeter: competition sites reserved for athletes, spectators and accredited personnel,
  • black perimeter: anti-terrorist perimeter,
  • red perimeter: prohibition of motorised road traffic, except for specific derogations. OneGames pass, dematerialized passwill be required,
  • blue perimeter: regulated motorized traffic perimeter, traffic deviation.

Olympic routes

Another difficulty for traffic is the creation of Olympic routes. In total, 185 km of roads on the roads around Paris will befor the use of accredited vehiclesto transport athletes, journalists and official delegations, as well as emergency and safety vehicles, taxis and ambulances. On some axes, the other vehicles will therefore have to move from two lanes to one.

The Olympic routes will beactivated from 15 Julyon the following axes:

  • A1 between Roissy Charles de Gaulle and the Gate of the Chapel until 11 September,
  • A4 between Collegiate and Bercy Gate until August 13 and from August 30 to September 8,
  • A12 between Rocquencourt and Montigny le Bretonneux until 13 August then from 27 August to 8 September,
  • A13 between Porte Maillot and Rocquencourt until 13 August then from 27 August to 8 September,
  • Thering, from the Porte de Vanves to the Porte de Bercy, passing through the north until 13 August then from 22 August to 11 September
  • Circular Boulevard (La Défense) until August 13 and from August 22 to September 11.

These restrictions of access and traffic will inevitably complicate travel, the path of wisdom will likely lead to changes in delivery times and routes.
