Inflation pushes US customs to adjust its tariffs
From 1 October 2024, the minimum and maximum thresholds for collection of the tax « Merchandise Processing Fee » will be adjusted following a notice published by the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP).
Merchandise Processing Fee (MPF) is a user charge levied by the US Customs & Border Protection (CBP)*, U.S. Customs and Border Protection Service, at the time of importation of a good into U.S. territory.
It is charged in addition to US customs duties in the form of a tax on the value of imported goods, i.e. ad valorem, at the applicable rate of 0.03464 %. It is thus calculated on the FOB value of consignments. This tax is also known as the « Customs Appraisal ».
This right of use includes a minimum and maximum amount of collection based on the declared value of the consignment.
Until 30 September 2024, the minimum collection is USD 31.67, while the maximum is USD 614.35.
As from 1 October, the applicable minimum collection will be USD 32.71 and the maximum will be adjusted to USD 634.62.
This change in thresholds is one of the consequences of inflation. Note thatonly the thresholds will be affected, the ad valorem rate of 0.3464% will not change.
* US Customs and Border Protection (CBP): US government agency responsible for preventing illegal goods and undesirable people from entering the US. The CBP's objective is both to protect borders and to facilitate trade and business from and to the United States.
