Increase in French river traffic in 2019
TRANSPORT
In France, inland waterway transport increased by 10% in 2019.
As an alternative to road transport, river traffic is attracting more and more companies wishing to reduce the environmental impact of their flows. 2019 marks a first turning point since 2013 with a 10% increase that could have been even greater without the summer heat wave that led to the closure of some channels. The agri-food goods have recorded the greatest increase to 15.5% while the transport of containers has displayed +3.8%.
This new impetus is expected to continue with the construction of a new canal between Douai and the Scheldt, which will link the Seine to the 20 000 km of the North European network.
