Closure of the Mont Blanc tunnel: guaranteed effects on road traffic!
Already impacted by the closure of the railway link between France and Italy since the collapse of the Orelles railway tunnel, in Maurienne, a year ago, transalpine freight traffic is now passing through the Fréjus tunnel following the cut-off for work on the Mont Blanc tunnel until 16 December 2024.

Interminable queues from 8am to 6pmextend delivery timesfor all goods for export to the Italian market. On the other hand, slow traffic impacts thedriving times of drivers, forced to stop in order to comply with the regulations of work specific to road transport.
Recently, Andrea Amalberto, President of Confindustria Piemonte, went up to the niche indicating that every change in route constituted a loss of competitiveness for their goods. Indeed, taking the Fréjus tunnel requires a detour, 168 kilometers separating the Mont Blanc tunnel from the Fréjus tunnel via the A43 motorway. And which says extended route means upward transport cost.
At present, the consequences are those that were foreseeable, but on the other side of the Alps, many are concerned about more serious future impacts by snowball effect. If the Fréjus tunnel were to be cut, the impact on commercial efficiency would be enormous. France remains one of Italy's main trading partners, with a volume of47 million tonnes of goodsper year.
The first month of closure of the Mont Blanc tunnel did not result in a total stoppage of traffic. For the sake of trade between France and Italy, it is hoped that this situation will continue without worsening until 16 December.
