EU enlargement: negotiations expected with Ukraine and Moldova
The European Commission has recently transmitted to the Council a review of the progress of certain countries in terms of fundamental reforms, which are required by the Union to apply for candidate country status, with the objective of joining the European Union.
At the last Council Summit, the President of the Commission called for the enlargement of the Union, arguing for a strong economic and geopolitical logic. The countries cited by the Commission at its presentation are:Ukraine, Moldova, Georgia, Montenegro, Serbia, Northern Macedonia, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo and Turkey.
The two most advanced countries on this subject are Ukraine and Moldova for which the Union is expected to open accession negotiations in the coming months.
Turkey remains the least advanced country, with accession negotiations stalled since 2018 (see Table 1).EU/Turkey: Will the Brussels door remain closed against Ankara?).
Next stage scheduled for 14-15 December in Brussels where the leaders of the Twenty-Seven must meet to decide whether they will actually launch accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova. This decision must be taken unanimously in order to materialise.
