Human rights: Human Rights Watch report 2023 just released

Civil war in the Ethiopian Tiger, popular uprisings in Iran, military dictatorship in Myanmar (cf.Myanmar: The situation of workers worsens), zero VOCID policy and Uighurs repression in China... Human Rights Watch (HRW) released its thirty-third annual report on 12 January.*which reviews the status of human rights worldwide. More than one hundred countries are studied through various prisms (women's rights, freedom of expression, disability, etc.), to alert readers to the most serious shortcomings, and to urge governments to remedy them.

In 2022, it was Ukraine that attracted the attention of the international community, for the armed conflict that has intensified in its territory since February. HRW welcomed the united and rapid response of countries that have chosen to apply strong sanctions against Russia, but deplores the « double standard » the European Union in its treatment of Ukrainian refugees compared with those from Syria or Somalia.

This NGO investigation work is carried out in cooperation with local activists and experts, aware of human rights violations in their respective countries. By firmly refusing any government contribution (financing comes from private donations and foundations), HRW ensures that it is able to freely criticize and expose to the public the various abuses of States.

The information contained in the report also covers human rights-related issues, such as global warming, which affects the most vulnerable populations, and the role of business ethics in social justice. The example of Japan is cited in this respect, with the recent emergence in the archipelago of « guidelines for respect for human rights within asupply chainResponsible » HRW's support, while recalling the need to place these practices at the heart of legislation.
