China: Application for accession to the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPCPP)
China, which had repeatedly expressed its desire to join the CPTPP« Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for TransPacific Partnership » (Global Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement andProgressive), just filed aformal application for membership on 17 September.
Bouded by the United States that had withdrawn their participation in the project's first fruits in 2017 (cf.Free Trade: the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPA) will take place without the United States!), this trade agreementin force since 30 December 2018Today, there are 11 countries: Japan, Canada, Australia, Vietnam, New Zealand, Singapore, Mexico, Peru, Brunei, Chile and Malaysia. Representative approximately13.5% of the world economyThis is the most important free trade agreement in the region. In addition to95 % abolition of customs dutiesIt also includes aspects of labour law, environmental protection, anti-corruption, e-commerce, etc.
Alreadymember of the gigantic RCEP agreement(cf.RCEP: The world's largest free trade agreement is signed!), Beijing is pressuring to integrate the CPTPP, in particular by stressing the strong potential for cooperation between the Chinese and Australian economies, even though relations between the two countries have clearly deteriorated in recent months (cf.China/Australia: reciprocal complaints to WTO).
Other countries expressed interest in the CPTPP, including the United Kingdom (cf.United Kingdom: application for accession to the Trans-Pacific Treaty (TPCPP)) and Thailand.
