BREXIT: The impossible agreement generates dissension within the EU

In the BREXIT saga, the final sprint is launched, the negotiators are getting on with what should be the ultimate round of negotiations... but differences remain and tensions within the European Union are being felt.

Time is running out, and yet the talks on a possible agreement between the European Union and the United Kingdom are turning around. Indeed, the two camps still fail to reach consensus on the following three points:

  • Fishing The British want to regain control of their territorial waters while, on the EU side, some countries hope to be able to continue using the British fishing zones. Michel Barnier's latest proposalreturn to the United Kingdom 15 to 18% of the value of catches by European fishermen in British waters
  • Fair competition The EU wants to regulate market access by regulating state aid, the environment and labour law, while the UK wants to regain its sovereignty and no longer be subject to European rules
  • Future governance How can we deal with future disputes under the new agreement? No acceptable solution could be found at this stage.

Each camp will have to take a step towards the other to achieve the common objective of a post-Brexit agreement.

Within the European bloc, there are fears of too large concessions that would disadvantage the Member States: France, the Netherlands, Belgium, or Spain have already indicated that they would reject an agreement that would run counter to their interests...

Less than one month from the end of the transition period, nothing is yet earned.
