REACH Alert: 4 new substances of extreme concern

Four new substances have been added to the List of Substances of Extreme Concern (SVHC) due to their serious effects on human health and the environment.

On 16 January 2020, ECHA announced the integration of 4 new substances on the Candidate List of Substances of Extreme Concern (SVHC) :

  • Diisohexyl phthalate (not recorded under REACH),
  • 2-benzyl-2-dimethylamino-4-morpholinobutyrophenone,
  • 2-methyl-1-(4-methylthiophenyl)-2-morpholinopropane-1-one,
  • Perfluorobutane sulfonic acid (PFBS) and its salts.

Three of these substances were added due to reproductive toxicity and 4th due to a combination of other properties of concern.

They are all essentially In polymers.

Iaperfluorobutane sulfonic acid (PFBS) and its salts being also used as polycarbonate flame retardant in electronic equipment.

Check daily the evolution of the status of SVHC substances and anticipate the bans in Annex XIV of REACH!

ATTENTION

Listing on this list entails immediate obligations for suppliers of these substances.

Any supplier of articles containing SVHC in a concentration greater than 0,1 % (by weight) has communication obligations to customers throughout the supply chain.

Importers and producers of articles containing one of these new SVHCs must inform ECHA within six months, i.e. by 16 July 2020.

NB: substances on the list are then likely to be banned or subject to authorisation (Annex XIV).
