EU/MERCOSUR: France still opposes free trade agreement
The farmers' movement that has shaken France in recent weeks has repositioned the free trade agreement between the EU and part of the MERCOSUR (Southern Common Market) countries in the centre of attention. In view of the circumstances, French President Emmanuel MACRON, during his visit to Sweden on 30 January, wished to recall his firm opposition to this agreement, in particular because of the absence of a « mirror clauses ».
In the case of a trade agreement, the principle of a mirror clause is to require each of the two parties toapply the same standardsgoods marketed between them. Including such clauses in this pact would ensure that agricultural products imported into the Community territory under this agreement comply with the production standards and environmental standards applicable within the European Union. According to France, the absence of these clauses would amount to the introduction of unfair competition against which its farmers would struggle.
In spite of Paris' firm position, the ongoing exchanges are complex and far from over, the French Prime Minister's move to Berlin last Monday, during which German Chancellor Olaf Scholz recalled that this treaty was profitable and necessary for Germany.
