Tunisia-China: Harmonization of Certificate of Origin to Facilitate Exports
Tunisia and China are taking a new step in their trade relations. The two countries agreed on a single model of origin certificate, an essential document in many export operations. Behind this discreet advance is a clear objective: to simplify the steps taken by Tunisian companies wishing to access the Chinese market.
This certificate of origin, which allows proof of the origin of the goods, is one of the essential documents required during customs procedures. Both countries have thus harmonized its content, presentation and characteristics so that the same model is recognised on both sides. Once the last administrative validations have been completed, it will be made available to companies via Tunisian chambers of commerce.
At first glance, this is a technical measure. Yet its impact is very concrete: to ease red tape and smooth trade.
By standardising this document, the authorities seek to further secure export operations and to reduce possible difficulties in the recognition of certificates.
However, this agreement does not alter the rules on access to the Chinese market. Companies will continue to comply with existing customs requirements and rules of origin. However, the harmonisation of the certificate should make the procedures more legible and faster.
This initiative is part of a broader movement of rapprochement between China and several African countries. Since 1 May 2026, Beijing has established a preferential regime in favour of States maintaining diplomatic relations with Beijing. In this context, Tunisia is urged to adapt, gradually adjusting its administrative tools so as not to remain on the margins of these new business dynamics and enable its companies to take full advantage of them.
