Despite the pressure from the Chinese authorities, the United Nations (UN) is talking about possible « crimes against humanity » in the Xinjiang province in its report issued on 31 August, which states that there is irrefutable evidence directly incriminating the Chinese government.
According to the United Nations investigation, credible evidence suggests that there are recurring practices of torture, the existence of forced labour camps, forced medical treatment and poor conditions of detention. This report brings the seal and legitimacy of the United Nations to the long-standing accusations made by human rights NGOs on the basis of direct testimonies, research and leaks of Chinese government documents revealed by several international media.
On the other hand, the latter does not repeat the term « genocide », charges against Beijing by the United States, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Canada and France (cf.Forced Uighurs Labour: Recognition of Genocide by France). The United Nations encourages China totaking prompt and meaningful actionin favour of the Uighur population and other predominantly Muslim groups. France, for its part, responded quickly by calling on China to implement the recommendations of the report and to put an end to human rights violations.
Beijing has always strongly rejected these accusations and tried to block the publication of this document, accusing the various protagonists of wanting to harm it. Michelle Bachelet, United Nations High Commissioner until 31 August, whose highly supervised visit to Xinjiang last May had been strongly criticized by various NGOs for his lack of political courage, finally resisted internal and external pressure. By publishing the report in extremes, the former High Commissioner obliges the UN and its member states to put pressure on Beijing to stop the persecution of the Uighurs.
