
At present, rail freight only accounts for9% of inland freight transport in France (compared with 18% in the European Union, with Brussels targeting 30% in 2030, while 90% of them are routed. In France, the volume of goods transported by train has fallen by 43% in 20 years, while road freight, which is more polluting, has increased by 16%.
In orderdoubling the modal share of rail freight in France by 2030A number of measures are being implemented within the framework of government environmental measures:
- OneCharter, proposed by the Ministry of Transport, was signed on Monday 13 September, so that all actors in the sector, including shippers and rail network, combine their forces to green the transport of goods.
- Already granted in 2021, an annual envelope ofEUR 170 millionwill be extended until 2024 to support the operation of rail freight services. It will be added to the EUR 1 billion investment in the recovery plan to improve infrastructure.
- In order to support operators, theTraffic chargefor private or public rail freight operators will also be covered by the State from 2022 to 2024.
- Finally, a budget ofEUR 210 millionwill be devoted to the work of the tracks which, carried out at night, are currently overbid the costs.
