International transport: Hong Kong's port wins the World Top 5

The port of Hong Kong is now in seventh place in the world, weakened by the increasing competition from seaports on the Chinese continent and unable to compete with Singapore.

In the 1990s Hong Kong was one of the largest ports in the world and dominated the world market... But that was before!

In 2018, Hong Kong handled 19.64 million containers (TEU), compared to 23.54 million in 2006 (-16.5%).

Since then, Chinese ports have developed at high speed on the continent: they now dominate the maritime transport market.

Only the port of Singapore still manages to get out, both well and badly, its pin of the game.

On the highest step of the podium, Shanghai has handled nearly 42 million TEUs in 2018, it is almost 5.5 million better than Singapore.

A difference which can be explained in particular by the low labour cost of Chinese port workers, the proximity to production sites, but especially the ability to accommodate larger ships.
