International transport: the New Silk Road will be Sino-Russian
The project saga « Belt and Road initiative » (B&R) launched by China in 2013 continues, but the emergence of an alternative route between Asia and Europe is struggling to find its way between Russian culture and Chinese investment.
On the New Silk Road4 Central Asian countries (Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kirgizistan and Tajikistan) are at the heart of geopolitical issues due to their resources of hydrocarbons and raw materials.
If The European Union accounts for 25% of the region's exportsChina takes 21% and Russia 18%.
200 000 containers are planned to transit by rail via Central Asia in 2019, i.e. 2.1% of containerized shipping traffic of goods China / Europe.
A route that is still very expensive for a delivery time twice as fast as the sea, especially for sourcing areas in the interior provinces of China (cf. Rail freight China – Europe: « true » alternative to shipping?).
