Suspensions and autonomous tariff quotas: updated to 1 January 2026
For French companies, these measures are a lever of competitiveness, allowing for a reduction or even abolition of import duties on products not available or insufficiently produced within the European Union. The industrial sectors most concerned include automobiles, chemicals, metallurgy, electronics and agri-food.
Among the most affected products are certain automotive parts and components (transmission elements, gearboxes), synthetic chemicals and intermediates used in pharmacy, cosmetics or plastic products, as well as specific metals and alloys such as magnesium or certain technical aluminiums. The food industry is also concerned with processed ingredients and raw materials. These products often represent sensitive cost items for French importers.
From a regulatory point of view, an autonomous tariff suspension allows automatic exemption from customs duties, without volume limitation, provided that the conditions laid down in the applicable Regulation are met. On the other hand, an autonomous tariff quota is granted within the limits of a given volume, requires the indication of a specific order number in the customs declaration and is allocated in accordance with the principle of first come, first served, as provided for by European legislation and implemented through the system RITA.
