CSR: European Directive on the duty of vigilance reacts to international textile players
As Brussels concocts a text on the duty of vigilance (cf. CSR: European Commission adopts proposal for a directive on due diligence), the textile federations of seven major production countries, supported by five transnational organisations, made recommendations to EU decision makers on how to develop this CSRD (Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence) directive. The major fear of the players in this sector is the risk of distortion of competition.
The Sustainable Apparel Coalition, amfori, Ethical Trading Initiative, Fair Wear Foundation and Transformers Foundation have thus come together with the member manufacturers' associations of the Sustainable Terms of Trade Initiative to represent the trade sectors. Turkey, India, Indonesia, Burma, Pakistan, Morocco and Bangladesh.
Together, they put forward three main proposals:
- Improving the text that imposes a duty of vigilance on marks from the moment the « relationship is established » with a supplier, implied contractualized. In practice, therefore, companies simply risk avoiding all forms of contracts...
- Address power imbalances between buyers and suppliers, generally in a context of weak governance and protection of human and environmental rights
- Clearly define the guidelines and the terms used in the text (« partners », « indirect partners », « business partners », « relationships established », etc.) in order to avoid as much as possible the risks of country-specific and ultimately unequal treatment.
