According to the report entitled «Made in Ethiopia: the challenges of the new border of the garment industry»*Ethiopian textile workers earn an average of USD 26 per month... This is much less than Chinese workers (US$ 326/month), Kenyans (US$ 207/month) or Bangladeshi workers (US$ 95/month)!
In their ambition to create a brand « Made in Ethiopia »the Government, local and international actors of the Ethiopian textile and clothing sector do not foresee that the basic wage would be too low for workers to live with: « The main mistake the government made was to assure Asian suppliers and Western buyers that Ethiopian sewing machine operators would be docile with a low base salary. »indicates NYU Stern.
But the garment workers, among them many women, who are disadvantaged and very poorly trained, are in cultural conflict with the Asian leaders of the factories...
Consequences: poor productivity, repeated strikes and a strong turnover.
In Hawassa Industrial Park (HIP), factories had to replace their workforce in full during the first year due to difficult working conditions.
The Ethiopian government hopes, however, that exports of clothing, which currently amount to USD 145 million/year, will rise to about USD 30 billion... An objective that seems unrealistic in the current context.
