CLP Regulation: clearer information on the hazards of chemicals

The revision of the CLP Regulation, approved in mid-October by the EU Council, will make it possible to modernise the labelling of chemicals at European level to strengthen the protection of human health and the environment.

On 14 October, the EU Council approved the revision of the CLP (Classification, Labelling, Packaging) Regulation on the classification, labelling and packaging of chemicals. This revision will allow the existing legislation from 2008 to be refreshed. In addition to being clarified, the rules for labelling chemicals will be declined to adapt to new forms of trade such as bulk sales or e-commerce. Warnings against more recently detected hazards such as endocrine disruptors or the persistence of certain products will also be integrated.

This revision of the CLP Regulation comes in parallel with that of the REACH Regulation, which is a key element of the strategy forsustainability of chemicalsOne of the key points of the Green Pact for Europe.

Once signed by the President of the European Parliament and the President of the Council, the new CLP Regulation will be published in the Official Journal of the European Union for entry into force 20 days later.
