REACH 2020: new obligations for EU importers, manufacturers and distributors

At the end of 2019, the ECHA will launch a database for substances of concern (SVHC) contained in articles.
In July 2018, the revision of the Waste Directive (2008/98/EC), integrated into the packaging legislation and European policy oncircular economy.
The objective of the database is twofold:
- Provide specific information to the waste management and recycling chain for reduce chemical risk during these operations and promote the manufacture of non-toxic materials.
- Raising consumer awareness to encourage them to choose articles made from materials that do not or do not have a significant impact on health and the environment.
At the same time, municipal waste recycling targets have a defined European timetable:

2023
- Additional selective sorting, organic waste must be collected separately

2025
- 55% of general waste (and 65% of packaging) must be recycled
- Additional selective sorting (in addition to paper, cardboard, glass, metal, plastic): separation of textile waste and hazardous waste

2030
- 60% of general waste (70% of packaging) must be recycled
-
2035
- 65% of general waste must be recycled
This new phase of REACH regulation reinforces the Reporting obligations importers, manufacturers and distributors of articles containing substances of concern on the candidate list (cf. International atmosphere of March 2010).
