Northern Irish Protocol: Tea towels burn between London and Brussels
The European Commission announced on Friday 22 July that it had launched a campaign against the United Kingdomfour new infringement proceedingsfor failure to comply with the provisions of the Post-Brexit Protocol on Northern Ireland. These new actions, which could lead to a referral to the European Court of Justice, are added to the three others which were opened on 15 June.
These new procedures concern non-compliance with customs obligations and the control of goods circulating between Great Britain and Northern Ireland, as well as non-compliance with European legislation, in particular on alcohol and VAT taxes for e-commerce. The previous three concerned non-compliance with certification requirements for the movement of agri-food products, requirements for sanitary and phytosanitary controls, and failure to provide the European Union with certain trade statistics for Northern Ireland.
London has two months to respond to Brussels mailand take steps to comply with the Northern Ireland Protocol. It should be recalled that the Protocol provided for specific provisions both to avoid the return of a border between Northern Ireland and the EU Member Republic of Ireland and to protect the integrity of the European market.
Brussels deplores the attitude of London which has always been closed to discussions on the subject (cf.EU / United Kingdom: tensions over the Northern Ireland Protocol) and has even started a bill to unilaterally revise the Northern Ireland Protocol. The British Government would like the goods moving between British territory and Northern Ireland to pass through a « green channel », rapid clearance corridor, releasing them from administrative procedures.
