Mode – Clothing: the fur item hunt is open!

According to a press release issued by the city of San Francisco (USA) on 20 March, « The aim of this law is to send a strong message to the fur industry that the cruelty endured by animals to make them clothes and accessories is not in keeping with the values of the city.« .
It is also said that livestock farms are harmful to the environment and contribute to air and water pollution. In addition, the fur industry is accused of resorting to hazardous chemicals for the manufacture of products (chromium, formaldehyde,...).
The definition of « fur articles », as targeted by local legislation, is included in the official communiqué: « any clothing covering any part of the body, or any fashion accessories including, without limitation, bags, shoes, hats, gloves, jewelry,...«
The regulations will come into force on January 1, 2019 for in-store and online sales. However, retailers able to submit proof of purchase of their products prior to March 20, 2018 will be able to sell them until January 1, 2020.
NB : This prohibition does not apply to
- products made from sheep or lamb skin
- used articles
Non-compliant enterprises after the coming into force of the law will be liable to fine of USD 500 per item per day.
