India limits part of its imports from Bangladesh
Since 17 May, India has imposed port restrictions imports of certain goods such as manufactured clothing and processed food products from Bangladesh to India. These restrictions do not apply to Bangladeshi goods transiting through India but destined for Nepal and Bhutan. The Bangladeshi ready-to-wear import is now prohibited via land ports and only authorized via the seaports of Nhava Sheva and Kolkata, India. Importation of fruit, fruit-flavoured beverages, soft drinks, processed food products, cotton and cotton yarn waste, finished plastic and PVC products (except pigments, dyes, plasticizers and granules constituting inputs for Indian industries) and wooden furniture were banned from six entry points in northeastern India (Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, Mizoram, Changrabandha and Fulbari). However, these restrictions do not apply to imports of fish, LPG, edible oil and crushed stone.
In total, these measures could affect $770 million in goods, or about 42% of bilateral trade. For some Bangladeshi companies, India is the largest market for processed food, plastic products, furniture and finished PVC products.
This announcement came after Bangladesh had banned imports of wheat and rice from India by the same land routes the previous month.
