United States imposes customs duties and anti-diversity policy

On 9 April 2025,specific sanctionswill cover products imported by the trading partners listed inAnnex I of this decree. The announcement of these measures has triggered many countries around the world. The European Commission, which is already finalising a first package of countermeasures against the United States in response to US steel tariffs, is now preparing for further countermeasures to protect the interests of Community companies if negotiations with the US President fail. The introduction of these new taxes is far from being the only move that Donald Trump has taken on international trade. The US President has also recently attacked the internal policy of European companies. At the end of March, the US embassies in several European countries sent a letter to local companies, notably in France, Italy, Spain and Belgium, ordering them to certify, within 5 days, through the completion of a form, their compliance with the US presidential decree.Ending Illegal Discrimination and Restoring Merit-based Opportunities, prohibiting diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) programs within U.S. federal entities and their subcontractors. The Missive states that this certificate is essential for government payment decisions and is subject to the False Declarations Act.
