Would shipping companies not anticipate opposite winds?
If large shipowners continue to record record profits (cf.Maritime freight: Is there an agreement between shipping companies?), the volumes of containers carried on board ships have been declining since the beginning of the year. From January to March, the world's container volumes increasedby almost 2 %compared to the same period of the previous year, with a sharper decrease in strategic beams from the Far East: -14.4% to North America compared to the same period of 2021, and -13.3% to Europe. Exports from China fell to their peak in April.lowest level in nearly two years.
Since early 2022, tensions on logistics chains have created longer travel times and have negatively affected the effective capacity of the global fleet. In addition to container vessel traffic off large ports, the shipping sector is simultaneously experiencing a decline in trade related to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine and the effects of the latest Chinese confinement.
