French rail freight at the lowest level since 1980
The figures for the ART (Transport Regulation AuthorityIn 2023 the transport of goods by rail in France fell by 17%. Our European neighbours are doing no better, but the average decline is less significant than in Hexagon (8%).
This unprecedented decline may partly be explained by the economic situation, due in particular to strikes linked to the pension reform which severely disrupted traffic in March 2023.
In addition, five months later, in August 2023, the France-Italy axis was stopped following a collapse in Maurienne (Savoie). To date, traffic has not resumed and it is hoped that its recovery will be effective by the end of 2024.
Finally, the SNCF's freight transport activity was significantly reduced following an agreement between the French State and the Brussels Commission, thus obliging it to divest 20% of its activity because of massive aid received illegally.
At the same time, private actors, such as large food groups, show goodwill and try to use the train to put fewer trucks on the roads, but so far these isolated actions do not make it possible to correct the dramatic figures of French rail freight.
It can only be seen that, despite its presence on all lips, the concept ofdecarbonization of transportwill need more time to be put on good tracks.
