Arctic Road Beats All Records in 2025
Over three years, traffic has increased from 43 to 103 vessels, illustrating the increasing attractiveness of this strategic seaway.
The oil tankers, which represent one third of the passages (34 in total), remain the main users of the Arctic route. Despite a slight decrease of two passages compared to 2024, they carry 1.9 million tonnes from the Russian ports of Murmansk and the Baltic to China. Conversely, trips to the west are often unladen to reposition ships.
The bulk carriers, the second most active category, 23 passages (compared to 15 in 2024), carrying 700,000 tonnes of coal to China. The Container carriers, they recorded 15 transits (compared to 11 in 2024), with an estimated volume of 400 000 tonnes. A direct line between China and the United Kingdom was even inaugurated by Cosco, marking a diversification of flows.
The total volume transported in 2025 reached 3.2 million tonnes, i.e. an increase of 52,4 % compared to 2023. This increase reflects increased trade through the Arctic, despite logistical and environmental challenges.
